The New Steelhead's First Town Meeting

By Bixyl Shuftan

Since November 2015, The Steelhead steampunk-themed community has been without a home after it's sims closed down. For most communities, this would have been the end. But most never left the group. Even though they found homes in other places, they never did forget the fun times they had back home. "Caledon is nice," Fuzzball Ortega, the community's sheriff and head DJ would say, "but it was not quite home." There would be some reminders. Club Gearz, the main club of the community, would reopen in Caledon. The location would also hold a community reunion.

Finally in early March, Fuzzball stated he was now able to purchase, and hold onto, a sim that would be the new home for the community. He soon annouced the sim was online, Steelhead Bay. But as it had just "literally rose from the depths," it was a blank slate with much to do.

But over the following days, Fuzzball made gradual progress in planning and setting up things. He was planning in advance which places would be for homes, and which would be for other locations. The first was a small lighthouse, "If nothing else, a good temporary build. Light is set to Auto, so when sun goes down, it comes on and rotates. ... Not as awesome as the Steelhead lighthouses in the past, but it'll do for now."

But the lighthouse was just the first step. There would be many more buildings to come, the most important being the town hall. Fuzzball would state, "Finding the lighthouse was easy. Searching for an idea on the look for Town Hall ... not so much. My original idea (for) the ground floor was to have the sheriff's office and the meeting room. Second floor would have a few offices, and a classroom (although I have the 512 parcel next to the lot, just in case I go with a different idea). Also, haven't parceled it off yet, but I have a 1536m template laid out for a ballroom. A suggestion was made to have the ballroom be pat of town hall (hence the 512 parcel nest to the town hall lot for possible school house)."

"Also, at one time we were using the Oregon state motto 'Alis Volat Propriis' (She Flies With Her Own Wings). I think it's fitting to use it again."

But eventually, the town hall would be up, the parcels would be laid out, and Fuzzball decided it was time to open the place up to the community, starting with it's first town meeting since the estate's closing, "Spread the word. Tuesday evening. Opening Steelhead Bay for those in Steelhead groups, only. Town meeting, and potential renters can pick their lots. If I don't have the whole sim parceled out by then, let me know what you need, and I'll parcel it out for you. Please remember, this is my first time being a sim owner. Opening the sim up at 6PM."

I had to be elsewhere, so I sent my alt Rezzdammit, whom was in the Steelhead group, over. There were a number of others there, such as Willow Leafstorm, Jimmy Branagh, Baron Klaus Wulfenbach, (Baronin) Zantabraxus, Softpaw Sommer, Captain Veles Jägermonster, and a number of others. Fuzzball gave a few minutes for people to stumble over from the lighthouse, where the landmark given out led to. Then at 6:13PM, "Okay, Ladies and Gentlemen, I hereby call this first Steelhead town meeting in a very long time to order. Hoo if you got'em, and let the Floppy Dong count begin." And the air was quickly filled with cries of, "HOOOOOOOOO!!" Veles had to be reminded how the gesture worked, to which he replied, "Tenk hyu, Herr Scherriff. Vould nut be der zame mitout my hoo." Another Jagermonster, Dimo Beornssen, mused, "Iz amazing how qvick it all comes back, eh Veles?" He himself had a case of watery eyes, but insisted it was allergies and not crying.

Fuzzball went on, "Okay, so, Steelhead Bay......I tried very hard to continue by living in Caledon, and hanging out in other places. But, it just wasn't the same. So, after working out some of my finances, I purchased this sim.  I missed my Steelhead family, and it was time you guys came home." Softpaw commented, "I think we all feel the same." Dimo added, "Be it ever zo madcap, dere's no place like home."

Fuzzball stated he wasn't alone in setting up the place, "I have had some help, and still getting help with setting it all up. Thad and Lumi came in world to assist. OldeSoul and Cassie Eldemar have been helping. Tensai and Lunar's typist have been extremely supportive. That being said, Tensai will be around, as will Lunar's typist in one form or another. But both requested not be doing any management duties. So, building and rp'ing, and having fun. That's their duties." Several people nodded and gave expression of support.

Fuzzball continued, "To assist me in sim management, Thad and Lumi are listed as Estate Managers, but only on a very limited basis, mostly to help me. Purdie Uggla is listed, just in case I accidentally lock myself out of the sim.......I heard some estate owners have done that from time to time." Miss Kate (katelynn.inglewood) mused, "I have banned myself from a parcel in Steelhead. Lunar had to come help me (giggle)." Another whom would be assisting Fussball, "Helping me for the most part, will be Jimmy." Jimmy waved, then turned around and grinned, "Stay out of trouble."

Fuzzball went on, "We still have work to do on the sim. Parcels needing to be set, street needs to be laid, docks need to be built. Some of my terraforming needs to be corrected.  But, it was time to give you guys access, and together, build Steelhead Bay. I also have plans on creating a radio play for Krypton Radio, called Steelhead. Think Gunsmoke with Gears." Jimmy hammed it up, pretending to limp a short distance to the podium, "Mr. Marshal!  Mr. Marshal!" Of Lunar's status, Fuzzball stated, "And since I want to tie it all together. For roleplaying/storytelling purposes, TotalLunar Eclipse, although the avatar is no longer in SL, is the mayor of Steelhead ((No coming up to me and saying that Mayor Eclipse said you can do this and that, though)). His alt, by the way, built this building.

Continuing, Fuzzball stated of the town hall, "Marshal's office will be on the second floor, with the jail cells.....so no criminals can tunnel their way out." Miss Kate asked about the school. Fuzzball answered, "Third floor is a loft, but there's the parcel next to this one that we can put in a school house." Jimmy commented, "Right next to the jail.  How apropos." Baron Wulfenbach retorted, "For you, perhaps." Dimo mused, "Vun's de school, de odder's de school of hard knocks, ja?"

Of other places, Fuzzball informed, "Club Gearz will also be moved to Steelhead. ... The big parcel template west of here, I'm thinking of rebuilding our original outdoor event area, the Kokopelli. And there's the large water area for underwater events. The lighthouse is pretty cool, by the way. it's set to estate time, so as the sun starts to set, the lighthouse will start to come on." Softpaw felt they "will need a good spot for the tea garden."

Going on, Fuzzball stated, "Still setting parcels down, but I do have several 512 lots already set. If by chance you need a bigger parcel, I can combine them, or set you up in a place that hasn't been parceled yet. (I) haven't set up the payment methods yet, but give me a few days. I am reserving the lots for those interested." Softpaw grinned, "Yeah I'm gonna need bigger then a 512." Veles asked, "Vot about der hotel?  Hyu gun haff vun uff doze, pliz?"

Fuzzball continued, "As for Steelhead's setting. Still in the Pacific Northwest. Matter of fact, Lighthouse Island is to the west, this time. Before it was East. Haven't written the convenant yet, but you know, keep the builds in theme, no walking around with your Floppy Dong out, be nice or Tensai will blow you up. Same old same old." Miss Kate asked, "What about breedables?" Fuzzball answered, "Those are fine. Also, if you haven't checked the map. We're north of Ravenwood Forest. Sticking close to all family members."

Fuzzball then got to a particularly important topic, "So, let's move on to Friday's event. What say I get Gearz plopped down and we have a dance here in Steelhead Bay?" There were cries of "YES!! and "HOOOOOOOOO!!" from the audience. Fuzzball then asked, "Okay, then. Anyone have a particular theme in mind? Other than Steelhead's Back B*tches?" They soon agreed to "New Beginnings." Fuzzball confirmed, "Okay, then. Friday, at Gearz, which will be put here in Steelhead, New Beginnings. And.....yes, I'll be playing 'This Is Home,' again." Softpaw added, "and all our other steelhead songs..I miss those."

Fuzzball brought up Willow, "Tuesdays, now, in addition to town meeting. Willow Leafstorm has her show on Krypton Radio, Strange Transmissions. It's her comedy music show. You guys should be listening to it as we speak. Wednesdays, she has Swingtastic, featuring music from the Dieselpunk era, Electoswing and jazz. This is held at the Green Fairy Cabaret in Ravenwood Forest. If you have the time, do drop by and join her. Saturdays, she has The Steam Powered Cabaret, which is her steampunk themed show, also at the Green Fairy Cabaret. And Sundays, it's Planet Tokyo, which features the best in Anime and J-Pop music. All shows are at 7:00 PM SLT and on Krypton Radio. May start doing my Monday night show in world if anyone is interested. That's at 7 and on Krypton Radio." Willow stated, "I will be making spring come soon in Ravenwood."

Fuzzball went on to their Relay team, "Okay, now Relay For Life of Second Life.  I've been busy with the sim, and we've only had one event so far. Thank you to Willow for the use of the Green FAiry for the event. We can go ahead and start planning more events. We also have our campsite builders. And this year's theme is Passport To Hope. Our total so far is L$48280. Lots of Relayers are happy to see Steelhead back in the game. Nita10 is a member of the Salmons. She's from outside the Steamlands but wanted to join our team. She is a survivor, although lost her voice to cancer." Someone asked about the New Babbage team, Fuzzball answered, "New Babbage doesn't have a team. Nor does Caledon. They all joined the Aether Chrononauts." Softpaw spoke, "Chronaughts was very welcoming and it was great to be there..but it just wasn't the salmons ..I felt lost on Relay day with out my fishes." Fuzzball concluded the Relay issue, "If there are any questions in regards to RFL, send me a notecard if I'm not online. I got a feeling my IM's are gonna start to cap. You can also email me, RFL or Steelhead business, at sheriff.ortega@gmail.com."

Fuzzball then began the conclusion, "And for this week, that's all that I've got. I just wanted to open the sim up. Missed seeing everyone. Glad we got the Jaegers back. By the way, Genie is doing fine. She's dealing with RL. So, may not be in world a whole lot. Does anyone have anything that they wish to add or announce?" Softpaw stated, "The tea garden will be back but I am looking into a new build for it." Kara Kent assed, "I have acquired a new microphone, and the Virtual DJ, and am learning how to DJ."

Fuzzball then concluded, "Put your pimping hats back on. Let's get the word out that Steelhead Bay is renting. Spread the word to the rest of the Steelheaders. Tell'em to come home. And if you have a spot already picked out, let me know so I can reserve it for you. ... Herr Baron if the consulate is interested in an embassy here, let me know what you need."

"And this first meeting, is adjourned. Love you guys." There were more cheers and ""Hoooooo!"s, "Thank you for all this work you have done for us!" Some residents went ahead and left. A few stuck around for a while, chatting and happy to be in their new home.

Softpaw Sommer would later post about the event in blog here.

And so, the Steelhead community has a new beginning. What was once thought to be the end turned out to be a long night of which dawn is finally breaking.

Tales From Steelhead: Interview With Tensai Hilra (2011)

Titled Friends in "Fly" Places, this interview was done by Franq Blackheart of the Steampunk Herald in April 2011, shortly after his interview with TotalLunar Eclipse.

* * * * *

When I first had the pleasure of meeting graceful designer in Second Life, Tensai Hilra, she was engaging in a spot of gardening.  That is to say, she was planting strandy bushels of head-high grass in row after row along the elegant streets of fantasy steampunk sim, Steelhead.

It was the eve of April 1st, and she aimed to surprise her husband TotalLunar Eclipse - possibly into fits of apoplexy, more likely into row after row of exclamation marks.  For Tensai and TotalLunar are the uncrowned King and Queen of Steelhead, its much-loved benevolent rulers and caretakers, and the Elven/feline embodiment of its humorous, strong, steamy spirit.

After offering to build Tensai a lawn mower of great immensity ("Spring showers," she quipped), we proceeded to have an out-of-character conversation about the Real Life solidarity of Steelhead's Second Life community.

I asked about TotalLunar's role as leader of the community.

"He goes by whatever, technically he prefers Owner.  It's all pomp and formality anyhow.  We love the place so much we bought it and expanded it! We focus on the community rather than the profit margin.  I'd rather log in to meet friends than customers.  This community is dear to me.  It literally has saved my life!"

Second Life seems to be very powerful in that regard.  Was it the community that helped you back to health?

"A lot of good people, if you know where to look," she winks.  "I was a troubling situation... I had just lost my job.. no income unexpectedly, and no employment for 6 months...'''

Tensai ran out of her medication, needed to combat physical pain and other conditions.  Her withdrawal was painful.
"I was bedridden.  My husband didn't work at the time.  No food in the house; it was grim...
"Then, all of a sudden.. Nabila, one of our citizens, shows up at my house... food in hand!... and says that, spontaneously, Steelhead City and all the Steamlands got together to help!
"She brought food, and even Paypal donations that helped keep the power on, buy more food, and pay rent!
"All of that came from the community!

Tensai was incredibly moved by the compassion and caring shown by the Steelhead and SL Steampunk communities.
"I wrote this blog entry shortly thereafter
         ( http://tensaihilra.wordpress.com/2009/11/27/thankyou/ )
"I was unable to speak!  I cried for a day in joy... I'm misty eyed, now, just thinking about it.
"I then knew I had done right sticking by this community.  The steamlands as a whole as well.

An illustration, perhaps, of exactly why people come to Steelhead. And stay.

  "Absolutely.
"The meds were for chronic pain... something I deal with daily now as I can't, won't, go back on the meds.
"In Real Life, I am in and out of a wheelchair as it ebbs and flows.  But as I always say... doesn't matter if I can't walk in Real Life... in here, I can fly!"

And with that, I reluctantly left her to tending her wild garden.  When you next find yourself in Steelhead, make sure you run into Tensai.  She has a story to tell.

Tales From Steelhead: Interview with TotalLunar Eclipse (2011)

Earlier in Steelhead's history, events there an in other Steam Age sims were covered by the Steampunk Herald (No relation to the Second Life Herald), run by Franq Blackheart. In this interview in 2011, Franq interviewed the mayor and owner, Total Lunar Eclipse, usually known simply as Lunar.

1.  What makes Steelhead unique?

You're asking someone who is extremely biased. *laughs*

Steelhead for its relatively small size is a close community. Each unique species is welcome and has a place here from mad scientists to tinies to fantasy oriented persons such as myself. It has always made me feel comfortable to live here even when I wasn't managing.

Also it has such difference in themes from one sim to another that no two places are alike. It is also ever changing, we encourage change and growth. (except St Helens, the city center is going to be downgraded into a smaller rustic town) Port Harbor pier is undergoing changes to add a more pirate theme to it. I learn to build better, I rebuild things, Tensai learns to script and sculpt better and she rebuilds everything.

Also it is stable. Steelhead is over four years old, and before it became Steelhead it was another community altogether. So this city, the concept and idea are over five years. I am also not the only person to run the city, my real life wife of 12 (going on 13) years is my SL partner in crime. We have no intention of stepping down and it is such a strong community that if the grid goes down... Steelhead will simply move to another grid.

2.  How will Shanghai's change of rating to Adult affect the community; sales, roleplaying, overall cohesion?

First and foremost we changed the rating of Shanghai to adult to maintain Shanghai as it was before the TOS changes came about. We did not want to alter Shanghai at all. It is notoriously known as a darker place with opium dens hiding underground and shady back alleys now several factions of gangs have moved into the city.

Before we came to the decision to change Shanghai to adult we consulted every single person who had land and rented in Shanghai for their opinion. Several stores in Shanghai would have to move due to the TOS (they openly advertised the use of drugs in the dens) and several stores outside of Shanghai had to move into Shanghai due to the change as well. We weighed the possibility of revenue for businesses and we were prepared to move folks out of Shanghai into Port Harbor or another sim of their choice if the change of rating was not favorable for them. No one moved out.

It also gave vendors ideas for changes. Such as adding a seedy tattoo parlor and skin store and be a bit more open with what they sell. (Tastefully done of course) We are the first Oriental Steampunk themed city and perhaps the only Adult Steampunk sim in the Steamlands, there has been a build in interest as far as that particular change of rating that is enticing to those that wish to be more liberal with what they sell. When we introduce Shangri-La it too will be adult rated.

As far as roleplay, Shanghai is a dangerous place. Being Adult rated gives it a more darker appeal to encourage personal RP. As far as overall cohesion Shanghai has always been the darker of its sister cities, it was a city overmined, overtaxed and one doesn't walk there alone.

One thing I want to address to everyone is the adult theme does not change our community and city standards. There will be no nudity on the streets, tasteful adult wares are to be behind closed doors. The change was specifically to maintain the city as it was. The rest of the estate is moderate, the community does not allow underage users... not avatars. The scamps that live in Shanghai still remain there, their users are responsible adults, they know which places they can and cannot go and are safe because they are protected by the various mobs and pink mecca.

*gets off soap box*

And the city is lovely... dangerously lovely.

3.  What recent and upcoming events best reflect the Steelhead spirit?

The new years dance was a fun example of who we are. Tensai created one of her artistic sim wide dance floor. The community celebrated together, destroyed giant clocks, it rained fish and Denny was in his skivvies.

As far as the future? We'll be celebrating Chinese New Years, which as in previous years gets very interesting.

With Thanks and Regards,
F. Blackheart Esq.

Interview With Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (And Baronin Zantabraxus)

When one goes to Steelhead, one comes across some interesting personalities. Some are involved in more than one region in the Steamlands, but still a big presence there. One such man is Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (Klauswulfenbach Outlander). He is better known for being the ruler of much of Europa in the chronicles of Professors Phil and Kaja Folio, known in some places as the "Girl Genius" graphic novels. But he can be encountered at various events involving the Steelheaders and other Steam communities, as well as Steelhead's group chat. A strong character, he is generally friendly to those polite to him. Second Life Newser recently met up with "The Baron," as he is often known for an interview. This was in Winterfell during it's Giant Snail Race, so there were a few distractions.

Bixyl Shuftan: "So, Sir, when did you first hear about Steelhead?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Hm. It has been quite some time. I suppose I heard about Steelhead in general Caledon chat. The other lands at that time were mentioned as there was already a good few with multiple citizenships. Frau Lowey and I visited, and found it quite pleasant and welcoming. It became our second Consulate office, a small brick building at first."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Perhaps I should have asked this question first (pardon my clumsiness as a near miss by a giant snail can be distracting) To those new to Steelhead and the Steamlands, how would you describe yourself and your role here?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: (chuckles) "No harm done. The Consulate has two main goals. One is to encourage inter-sim diplomacy, by enabling information exchange and sharing notice of events. The other is to make those who might be interested aware of Europa, our history and to share those materials. I serve as my own Consul, as we are unable to provide transport between dimensions safely, but without the Vice Consul, the work would have been immensely more difficult."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Transport between dimensions? Sounds pretty tricky."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Essentially experimental, ja. Zanta was rather perturbed with me when she worked through the ramifications of my presence here."

Bixyl Shuftan:  "The ramifications?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Interdimensional experimental travel? I could have been killed. Permanently."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Perhaps this question is painfully obvious, but what were among the things that could have gone wrong?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "We had already tested for a compatible environment on this side - as odd as this environment can be at times, so that was the least likely. Gates could fail during translation, causing travellers to be lost without options for recovery. There could have been hostile situations on this side undiscovered by testing. Also, dismemberment."

Bixyl Shuftan: "I guess there are plenty of risks into the unknown. (pause) I take it your very first trip through was uneventful?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Very, although I was surprised to find a poster of Lady Heterodyne inside a shop. Somehow the histories had 'leaked' over here - which is why I was recognized by a few Caledonians when I introduced myself. There were Jaegermonsters here as well, one of the Generals and a few others. Why I was not aware of this is a matter for some discussion elsewhere."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Sounds interesting. So a few travelers spread word about you?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "I introduced myself to Caledon society, and decided the best way to manage exploration and also, to make my time here productive, was diplomatically. I made an appointment with Herr Guvnah and established the first Consulate office."

Bixyl Shuftan: "How did things go with the group of Jagers that were here?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Quite well. I was glad to see them, as they are always good to have on hand, and they appreciated my presence as well. In fact, in short order the Vice Consul was made a Colonel."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Encounters with Jagers for most can sometimes be, interesting. I take it there were some events between they and the locals before your arrival?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Hm. I am not sure on that, Herr General did not provide reports to me, and since there were no crowds with pitchforks and torches after them, it was not a concern."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Sounds like they managed to avoid any serious incidents. What have been some of your more interesting challenges in the Steamlands since establishing your consulates?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Hmmm... good question, but I have an interruption. Bitte, a moment." The Baron stepped away momentarily to take care of some matters over a wireless, then returned, "Danke. ... Challenges, getting used to how this place works, of course. Armies are pointless, death is less inconvenient than a loss of garments or furniture."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Those do sound like some interesting challenges."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Learning the scale of values here - both financial and philosophical. Building and financing has been challenging, both positively and negatively. Frau Lowey has become quite good at all sorts of construction (I have rarely had sufficient uninterrupted time).

Bixyl Shuftan: "Of the consulate in Steelhead, how long before the building was expanded?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): "Hm. Herr Lunar started to fix the parcelling, which was left over from before the Ambertown flood, and offered not only a larger area, but to build it himself. I would estimate that was... perhaps late 2008, 2009 Linden Era?"

Bixyl Shuftan: "That was a few years ago."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Some mentions about other events lately have made me realize how long ago some things have taken place. We had that new building for quite some time - three stories, a basement, and a handful of events in the ballroom."

Bixyl Shuftan: "What were some of the most noteworthy builds besides the consulates?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Herr Lunar built a... not a replica, but a model inspired by the Castle Wulfenbach for Steelhead's first RFL, and has since given it to me for Europa." *points off to the southwest* "Beautiful work. Herr Liam Bean and Herr General Szondi did most of the work on the island, incidentally. The Jaegermeister did the RAW and the mushroom-trees; Herr Liam did the lava pump and some of the other building. Frau Lowey built the Luftlowen so we would have a dedicated area for boardgames and such."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Sounds like quite a bit of work was done"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "We need to find some spare prims, in fact. I had a few things returned despite what seemed a liberal margin when I was adjusting the build for Walpurgisnacht. We have our own 'sandbox' at height. Frau Lowey and Fraulein Nika both have constructions in work up there."

Bixyl Shuftan: "I imagine they can be busy sometimes"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Of course. There are those who see the staff group and expect it is some sort of 'appreciation society', but I expect everyone on my staff to be productive. We have an associated group for those who are merely interested." *looks at the notepad and adds, 'Wulfenbachian Emigres', open enrollment*

It was about this time a lady arrived, the Baron's wife, Baronin Zantabraxus (Zantabraxus Aristocarnas), "Greetings, Bixyl." We talked briefly about the race, then Zantabraxus steered our attention back, "It is not my intention to interrupt. Pray, carry on."

Bixyl Shuftan: "If you don't mind my asking, Baron, how did you and Zantabraxus meet?"

The Baron responded with a bit of laughter, with Zantabraxus giving a grin.

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "The time that mattered was when my lover drugged me instead of killing me outright and effectively dumped me in Skifander without resources or means to return home."

Zantabraxus: "He was rather charmingly lost."

Bixyl Shuftan looks a bit startled, "Well, an interesting way of meeting up to say the least."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Eventually, I helped her regain her rightful throne and we were together until I felt forced to leave urgently for reasons which I promised the Professors I would not discuss in detail."

Zantabraxus slides an arm around him, "It has been very good to see him again."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "It took me six years to get her here."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Did you mean Professors Phil and Kaja Foglio?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "They are writing a popular history of Lady Heterodyne's early years, ja."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Oh yes, how well do you get along with them?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Sufficiently. It is Agatha who tries to kill them on occasion."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Trying to 'shoot the messenger?' "

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "She does not appreciate some of the more... hm... creative presentations. I have already been through that with those absurd and amusing Heterodyne Boys stories, so I am not as concerned with what might be said about me."

Zantabraxus: "That girl has a temper. I can see why our son likes her."

The Baron chuckled a bit, and Zantabraxus grinned slightly.

Bixyl Shuftan: "Heh, Sounds like a few interesting stories."

Zantabraxus: "Klaus of course does not like a woman with a temper."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach snorted in amusement, "There was, seasonally speaking, that one story where Lady Heterodyne ended up in the rabbit suit."

Zantabraxus laughs, "Zeetha's suit was rather handsome."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Heh, sounds funny, not to mention appropriate for Easter. (grin)"

It was about this time that our attention was momentarily distracted by the Giant Snail race, but we soon got back on track.

Bixyl Shuftan: "Let's see, besides the building, what have been some of your more interesting experiences here, after the beginning?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Shapechanging is rather fascinating. Meeting Tinies."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Oh yes, the Tinies have a good reputation."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "We have something in common, it turned out."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Oh? What might this be?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach): "Waffles, (pause) Since my son so considerately let that slip."

Bixyl Shuftan chuckles a bit, "They found out through your son?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "The Professors included it in their histories."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Lots of people like waffles, but the Tinies do seem to have taken their appreciation of them to an art form."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "They have this substance, 'Essence of Waffle'. Like ambrosia. Although, it is liquid, so perhaps nectar is a better name."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Sounds like something that would be useful for a Belgian chef."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "He would have to get it away from me first."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Heh, of course Sir. (grins) So, besides Tinies and waffles, what other events have been among your favorites?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "The Relay For Life is notable, in part because Frau Lowey is quite engaged in it. Winterfell's 'Boobiethon', as undignified as name as it may have had, was an excellent effort for a good cause. The Consulate staff did a calendar for three years supporting the same efforts."

Zantabraxus (zantabraxus.aristocarnas) looks amused.

Bixyl Shuftan: "Oh yes, a major event here in Steelhead." *chuckles at the name*

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Steelhead participated as well, ja. Unfortunately, in some ways, this last year's event was the last one."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Oh, sorry to hear."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "The organizers felt it had done what they set out to do. They needed their energies placed elsewhere."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Oh, I see. (pause) What were some of the plans for the Steelhead Salmons this year?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "I do not know. I believe there is, or will be a merchant area set up in the train station, but I am not part of the subgroup. I support the campaign as a whole when and how I may, but there are at least four teams to which I must attend, ja."

Zantabraxus: "Fuzzball Ortega would know more about the Salmons."

Bixyl Shuftan: "What were the other teams? Four does sound pretty busy."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Steelhead Salmons, ACTS, Caledon, New Babbage... perhaps more, I am not sure. ACTS covers many communities. When the Consulate sponsored an RFL sim... two years ago, I believe, we had to credit it to Æther Chrononauts (now ACTS) to be as fair as possible."

Bixyl Shuftan: "You sponsored a sim? That was generous"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "They were just starting at that time as well, and allowed them some extra success that first year. My budget was treating me well at the opportune time. ... RFL's run weekend, Fantasy Faire, events such as that - they allow the most extraordinary builds to be created. Fascinating work, always enjoyable to see what can be done. On a smaller scale, Walpurgisnacht always provokes some amazing costuming from the attendees."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Oh yes, I think I was there, interesting event."(for those who don't know, Walpurgis Night is an European holiday much like Halloween about six months away from it)

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Our first annual event, and persisting yet (grins)."

Zantabraxus laughed.

Bixyl Shuftan: "Heh, I take it went better than planned?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "I believe the first was... 2008, ja. It had to have been. Some events need some momentum for success. Walpurgisnacht has always been extremely well attended. From the very first, in fact. Because of its success, we usually host one on Steelhead's nearest Friday, and we have started holding a third, somewhat experimentally."

Zantabraxus: "It has an interesting historical background, which I find appealing."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Duchess Eva and I have had to be careful about our scheduling, however. She has her Beltane celebration in the same timeframe, although hers always started earlier in the evening, and Walpurgisnacht times itself to include midnight specifically. This year she has it early, due to her personal schedule and the holiday being right in the middle of the week."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Oh, so a slight change of plans?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "More room. No conflicts, as the Caledon celebration is literalist - on the eve itself, until midnight. The other two events will be on the weekend. Beltane will be the weekend prior this time. Zanta, perhaps he would like to note the history you mentioned." *nudges her to explain*

Zantabraxus: "I need a few seconds, love. Could you start?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Ah, certainly. The holiday predates Christianity, but was given as the feast day for Saint Walpurgis, a martyred virgin. The older idea is that the eve of May 1, like the eve of November 1, is when the 'veils between the worlds' grow thin. Spirits can move back and forth easily, including malign spirits."

Zantabraxus: "It is celebrated in Europe, traditionally, and is 6 months distanced from All Hallow's Eve."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Mortals dress up in fancy dress, like demons themselves, to avoid being taken by the spirits."

Zantabraxus: "In Germany, in particular, it is linked to stories about the Brocken Mountain."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Which is why we have that on the Consulate lot during the dance."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Brocken Mountain?"

Zantabraxus: "It is one of the highest mountains in ... Harz, I think, in northern Germany."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "The temperatures at the peak are more extreme than its height would normally predict. ... Saxony, really."

Zantabraxus: "Similar to All Hallow's Eve, bonfires are prevalent."

Bixyl Shuftan: "It does sound like something American fans of Halloween would enjoy."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach *studies futuristic borders and shakes his head at the confusion made of things*

Zantabraxus: "In the case of Walpurgisnacht, it is to encourage the warmth of spring and the light of the sun to come, to welcome the change of seasons."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "And hide from the evil spirits. (grins)"

Zantabraxus: "I think secretly to help people feel less frightened of malign spirits. But 'welcoming the Spring' sounds less embarrassing for people than 'Hiding from the ghosts' hm? (grins)"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Our version is simplified - fancy dress and dancing. Duchess Eva welcomes the spring. We hide from the demons."

Zantabraxus: "That is the historical context."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Found Brocken Mountain on the map, a little more than a kilometer high."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "It acts taller than it looks."

Zantabraxus: "Our celebration is, as Klaus said, the night celebration with fires and spirits. It makes me think of that theatrical production I saw on the machines here, Klaus, 'Night on Bald Mountain.' One of the staff recommended it to me."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Ahh, from the entertainment, ja."

Bixyl Shuftan: "What was it about?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "It is part of a presentation called 'Fantasia'. We use the image for that on top of our own 'Brocken.' "

Bixyl Shuftan: "Oh yes, that's more widely known."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Although the music is written about St. John's Eve, it was used to illustrate this Walpurgisnacht-like scene in a most fabulous and artistic manner. The master demon, in fact, has a Russian name, not a Germanic one."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Sounds like there's much being planned for this year ... a Russian name for the master demon?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "It was a useful base for imagery. 'Chernobog'. One of the old Slavic gods, as the researchers have it, who was demonised by the Churches' influences. None of this is Scientific in any way, but it is a popular spring celebration that we share here."

Zantabraxus: "Czernobog?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Another spelling in Roman alphabet, ja. It does not always transliterate well."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Sounds like the event this year will be bigger than usual."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "With the 'Early Bird' time in addition, possibly so. Gräfin Wulfriðe will be helping host that, as she is an Easterner and will be well awake for it. Duchess Gabrielle will be doing the music there; Duchess Patty for Caledon, and I believe Fraulein Zanya Cross for Steelhead. So: Caledon, Wednesday the 30th 22.00-midnight, Steelhead, Friday the 2nd 19.00-22.00 including the 'afterparty', and Europa, 09.00-11.00 Saturday the 3rd."

It was about this time when the interview was interrupted by more giant snails "and a giant Herr Gullwing." After a bit, we composed ourseves again.

Bixyl Shuftan: "Perhaps I should have asked you this earlier, but whom have been the more interesting residents to interact with in Steelhead besides those mentioned?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "In Steelhead specifically? There are always the exiled Steeltopians, of course."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Exiled Steeltopians?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "For want of a better collective name, since Steeltopia vanished. The Emperor himself is in durance vile."

Zantabraxus: "The Bad Blue Wolf springs to mind."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Oh yes, I recall a number of encounters with him."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Invertigo Caldwell, ja. (pause) Let me see... the Managers, of course, are quite worthy of note. Tensai has been a very courteous and gentle hostess, especially when I was introduced to Steelhead. Extraordinary work that they do, when they have time to concentrate on it. Their RFL sim, for example, that was the inspiration for Nevermoor."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Now that sounds interesting. So that was the inspiration for Nevermoor?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Many of the elements built for that were transferred to the neighbourhood. Frau Tensai's Teslatron was in Port Harbor for a bit as well."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Sounds like you've been pretty busy, were there some future plans beyond the festival later this month that you can discuss?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "We have a new, small office in Philomenaville; we hope to be able to contribute to that community. The Baronin is hoping her schedule will permit her to enter some En Garde tournaments, and we should like to host some of those around the Steamlands as well."

Bixyl Shuftan: "The fencing games?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "We have several pistes, along with Tuesday classes, over in Europa; one here on the pub. I should like to invest in a few more, gradually."

Bixyl Shuftan: "I'm sure fencing fans will approve."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach then chuckled a bit.

Zantabraxus: "I should like to practice some today, speaking of."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "We have on staff, due to Fraulein Käpitanin Stereo Nacht, one of the En Garde... hm. Mentors, perhaps? I am not sure of her title. She and her wife are also exceptional builders, and are redoing the Wulfenbach Aerodrome."

Zantabraxus: "It is exciting to see the updates they have sent pictures of."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Redoing the Areodome? About how soon will the changes be finished?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "There is no firm deadline, and the visual changes will be minimal. It is more for efficiency - she is doing it in mesh. A few prims here, a little land impact there.... We have customised Warbugs, although I am not sure how often they are used. They are, however, available for any to fly."

Bixyl Shuftan: "I haven't heard them mentioned in a while."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "We had someone that I thought would be hosting a regular flight, but he seems to have lost interest quickly enough. We left the time-block on the calendar, however."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Perhaps you'll find someone else soon."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach smiles, "It would be pleasant to know that the island is in frequent use by all sorts. Fencers, fliers, zombie-hunters...."

Zantabraxus: "We should put some effort into locating somebody, Klaus."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "We might need someone active in the dogfighting first, and then persuade them to come base their activities on Europa."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Zombie hunters? Sounds like something another of my writers would enjoy looking into"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Wander around Europa, you never know what you might find."

Bixyl Shuftan: "I imagine it gets interesting."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Eventually, it would be pleasing to expand our landmass, but the economy would have to improve considerably first."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Yes, I imagine many people are having problems in that department."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach noded, a bit grimly. Zantabraxus put a hand on his shoulder, nodding too.

Bixyl Shuftan *checks his watch* "We've been where a while. Was there anything , or anyone, else that you wanted to mention?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Fraulein Zanya Cross has been responsible for the Wulfenbach clank troops that can be seen in a few locations; she has also created the amazing and popular hunting events during our twice-yearly Games Day."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Oh yes, those events can be fun."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Fraulein Käpitanin Stereo Nacht created Games Day for us, and it is held during the summer and winter, depending on schedules (no fixed dates).  We try to involve as many communities as possible, time permitting. (pause) Ah... Zantabraxus, anything else we can add?"

Zantabraxus: "Annechen is responsible for most of the buildings we have. She is a talented and strong right hand to my husband."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Ah, I never mentioned the Æther Salon. It was started over five years ago, and given over to me after three. Technically, it is a New Babbage event, but it is open to all Steamlanders. We have speakers from everywhere, on a variety of subjects."

Bixyl Shuftan: "When is it?"

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Third Sunday of the month at 2 PM. There is an aether-journal for transcripts, http://aethersalon.blogspot.com/. "

Bixyl Shuftan: "I'll try to drop by the next one, once I find out where it is."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "I am surprised you were not aware of it. I have included it in Steelhead's notes for announcement often, and Aether Chrononauts as well."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Guess I just put off giving it a visit ... I'll check it out next time. Or rather, this upcoming time."

Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: "Heh. Herr Jimmy's presentation will be an exception. Instead of tomorrow, it has been deferred to the 27th. We ran head-on into Easter."

It was about this time the interview came to an end. We talked for a few more minutes about Steelhead's mischevious blue wolf Invertigo Cadwell, "Oh, sweet lightning, his roadtrips alone, his infested mines, his mortal enemies trying to bribe me." But eventually we soon went our separate ways.

Steelhead Elections: Interview With Jobias Barthelmess

By Bixyl Shuftan

When Steelhead held it's election campaign for mayor recently, there were three candidates. Besides the incumbent TotalLunar Eclipse, two challengers came forward to run for the office. They were Willow Leafstorm, the owner of the Green Fairy club, and Jobias Barthelmess, whom was most well known for his attempted shooting of the community's sheriff Fuzzball Ortega. Jobias has been associated with other misdeeds, but none of those were proven. He also has a known bias against nonhumans, a definite negative in this community were elves, fae, weres, furs, nekoes, humans, and others socialize and do business freely. During the debate, Jobias was mocked by many of those in the audience, and even he himself admitted he wasn't the most popular candidate.

The elections went on as planned on August 6, with most feeling Jobias didn't have a chance at winning. But when the results were announced at the town meeting a week later, the results shocked the crowd. Jobias had gotten the majority of the ballots! How could he have gotten this, many openly wondered, feeling the votes had somehow been tampered with. While Lunar argued for calm, some such as Willow would hear none of accepting the "scoundrel and criminal" as mayor.

Soon afterward, I was going by the newly opened Steelhead public schoolhouse when I noticed two adults inside talking. Getting closer, I noticed they were Lunar, whom had built the place, and Jobias. Lunar saw me, and invited me in. Turning to the man in black, "Mr Barthemless, unless you're officially in office you can't fire anyone." Jobias regarded me momentarily, "Oh, *that* Fox News," then turned to back to Lunar, "Once the recount's done, however, and I'm sworn in office …" Lunar sighed, "Yes, after you've been sworn into office, the oath is taken, the paddling of fish then you're mayor." "Now, please, leave us," Jobias told the elven figure, "Your ears are distracting me. Finish my Town Hall!" Lunar stared at the mustached man for a moment, then simply commented, "Alright, play nice. Take care Bixyl." He then walked to the doors and left.

Bixyl Shuftan: "Good evening Jobias. It seems congratulations are in order."

Jobias Barthelmess: "Yes, well, THEY are demanding a recount. But, not to worry, I shall be sworn into office soon."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Oh yes, as I recall, your apparent victory took many by surprise."

Jobias Barthelmess: "And yet, I was declared the winner. Which is a good thing, because one thing that Steelhead City has been lacking is proper leadership, as well as utilizing the surrounding land properly."

Bixyl Shuftan: "How has it been lacking in leadership? And what's wrong with how it uses it's resources?"

Jobias Barthelmess: "Well, not to offend, but let's just say that there are times that good old fashioned HUMAN know how works best in situations."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Oh, please explain?"

Jobias Barthelmess: "It's just the natural order of things. Nothing more needs to be said."

Bixyl Shuftan: (raises an eyebrow) "What natural order of things, might I ask?"

Jobias Barthelmess: "Humans are superior. Look at some of the great minds of our time. Professor James Moriarty, Human. Doctor Fu Manchu, Human."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Hmmm, so those people are examples you're giving as superior humans?"

Jobias Barthelmess: "But of course. And, like me, are misunderstood."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Ah yes, it does seem your apparent victory has caused much discussion. Perhaps .... we could put a few matters to rest with this interview."

Jobias Barthelmess: "Yes, thank you."

Bixyl Shuftan: "To begin with, how did you decide to come to Steelhead?"

Jobias Barthelmess: "Merely traveling along, and ran across this town. Not realizing that Ortega had been living here for sometime before I arrived."

Bixyl Shuftan: "You knew of Marshal Ortega before coming here?"

Jobias Barthelmess: "Oh yes. His true name is Ortegavich. I had made an attempt at leadership in the past. The ruler of Moldavia, which is located in Eastern Europe, was, much like here in Steelhead, not utilizing his country to it's fullest potential. Ortegavich's wolf tribe, as well as other tribes, over threw me, and placed the buffoon I replaced back in power."

Bixyl Shuftan: "So your problems with him are because he's one of this particular tribe?"

Jobias Barthelmess: "That and a mangy mutt. They made him Marshal of this town, and yet, he's obviously useless."

Bixyl Shuftan: "How is he useless?"

Jobias Barthelmess: "All these others claiming that THEY protect Steelhead. Obviously, he's not right for the job."

Bixyl Shuftan: "One would think a werewolf would be quite useful in detering crime."

Jobias Barthelmess: "Attracting fleas, perhaps. It's time for changes in Steelhead, bringing industry here, making Steelhead the place to bring a bright future for mankind. Oh, yes, and of course, all non humans to wear collars. No particular reason, just something Professor Moriarty had suggested." ((Cuz I'm EEEEVIL!))

Bixyl Shuftan: *raises an eyebrow* "Collars? I assume you mean something other than shirt collars?"

Jobias Barthelmess: "No, I mean collars, like the one the Elf was wearing. It will keep them in line."

Bixyl Shuftan:  *keeps a straight face as he takes notes, but his tail flickers and bristles in an irritated manner* "Exactly what seems to be the problem as far as humans, and the various other races are concerned?"

Jobias Barthelmess: "It just does not seem natural."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Going back to the industry, what's wrong with the economic rate of growth the region already has?"

Jobias Barthelmess: "I mentioned this at the debate. They could do so much better than what they've done. Look at New Babbage. That's a prime example of what Steelhead could be. ONce I'm officially sworn in, trees in Steelhead and Nevermoor will be chopped down and large factories will be built. Also, in St. Helens, there will be strip mining. May also have the mines of Boomtown re-opened."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Why were those mines closed, might I ask?"

Jobias Barthelmess: "I'm not sure. I'll have to ask the Elf at our next meeting."

Bixyl Shuftan: "As for the strip mining and forest felling, well, there seemed to be a great deal of resistance to the idea at public meetings."

Jobias Barthelmess: "Ah, the primitives fear change. Not to worry, they'll get used to the idea."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Durring the meetings there were a few references to your, previous activities in Steelhead. Could you explain what these activities were?"

Jobias Barthelmess: "Ah….well…..I had a ......... " *fidgets*

Bixyl Shuftan: "Yes?" *has pencil and paper in hand*

Jobias Barthelmess: "Nervous breakdown."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Nervous breakdown?"

Jobias Barthelmess: "Yes, that's it. Nervous breakdown."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Interesting, Please explain."

Jobias Barthelmess: "Slightly delusional, it seemed I wanted to harm the mangy mu......I mean, Marshal Ortega. Apparently, I did shoot him with a silver bullet. But I've no memory of this." *tries to look innocent*

Bixyl Shuftan: "Oh yes, I believe Lunar mentioned it, and at the debate, you admitted to this."

Jobias Barthelmess: "But the doctor's at the sanitarium in Caledon took care of me, and I'm quite alright now."

Bixyl Shuftan: "I see." *takes notes* "Also, Lunar mentioned you had a few debts."

Jobias Barthelmess: "A Barthelmess repays all his debts. If I have any, I assure you, they WILL be paid off."

Bixyl Shuftan: *takes more notes* "Then there's the matter of the youth of the town. As I understand your plans mentioned at the debate were, less than well received."

Jobias Barthelmess: "Well, we can't have them running about, unattended. So, working in the proposed factories, and in the mine would be quite useful to them. Have them earn their keep, learn to be part of the workforce. Some of them smell bad already, so they're used to sweat and grime, obviously."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Well, if them running around is the question, why not just keep them in school, like the one we're in now?"

Jobias Barthelmess: "Well, they're not always in school, now are they? Can't lock them in here 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Already checked into that, I can't get away with it.....I mean.....Ummmm....NEXT QUESTION!" *pulls out a hankerchief and wipes his brow, muttering, "this reporter's good." *

Bixyl Shuftan: *has trouble keeping from cracking a grin and takes more notes* "Yes, um, as I recall, there were some concerns about voter security, about how the box seemed a little flimsy. Any comments?"

Jobias Barthelmess: "Well, the Elf said all votes would be safe in the box. If they're concerned about the box being flimsy, they should blame him. Not me."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Hmmm, it was my observation it was he who thought it looked flimsy."

Jobias Barthelmess: "Well, *I* didn't put it there. I had suggested helping out with the elections, but was rejected. Thankfully, I was allowed to run."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Curious how you chose to run under, what was it, the Villians Party?"

Jobias Barthelmess: "That's what they refer to me as. A villain. Myself, Moriarty, Fu Manchu, Thomas Edison….."

Bixyl Shuftan: *raises an eyebrow* "How is Thomas Edison a villain?"

Jobias Barthelmess: "Gaining credit for 'his' invention. " ((He stole the lightbulb.))

Bixyl Shuftan: "So, in your opinion, there needs to be more villains in politics?"

Jobias Barthelmess: "If you mean those poor misunderstood soles that were labeled as villains? Yes. Perhaps some to run news sources as well. The truth needs to be told."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Well, I shouldn't comment about my establishment's competition *restrains a smirk* "Let's see, being a villain, how well acquainted are you with the town's lawyers?"

Jobias Barthelmess: "The one's here are too nice."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Too nice? Please explain?"

Jobias Barthelmess: "Just like many others in this town. They're too soft. One of the reasons this city is so behind others, and not living up to it's full potential."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Like Remmington Pion, who ordered this special election?"

Jobias Barthelmess: "Yes. I believe he favored the elf to win the election. None of them realized how well liked I really am in Steelhead."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Interesting. In the debates you admitted you had some problems with your image."

Jobias Barthelmess: "Well, I will admit that I'm surprised to be the victor, but the results seem to be clear, and once the recount has been done, it will be made more clear. I AM the new mayor of Steelhead City, and a new dawn shall rise on this Pacific Northwest town."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Yes, after the recount. And as I understand it, a number of the others are demanding a very thorough count of the votes, including Willow Leafstorm."

Jobias Barthelmess: "Probably jealous because she didn't win."

Bixyl Shuftan: "She does seem very determined to keep an eye on you."

Jobias Barthelmess: "Yes, well, if that truly bothered me, I wouldn't be in Steelhead."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Let's see," *looks at his notes* "Was there anything we haven't covered?"

Jobias Barthelmess: You have my plans for Steelhead? Factories, mining, etc. Bringing a bright future to Steelhead. ((Poor misunderstood soul that I am)) I believe that we covered everything.......and some that will place me in a negative light."

"Now I have grown bored of your questions. Go, place your article."

Bixyl Shuftan: "Allright, see you at the recount. I'm sure it'll be ... interesting."

It was about then that I left the schoolhouse, and looking behind I could see Jobias slipping out, and heading away into the shadows.

Since the interview, the controversy over the Mayoral election continues. There's been talk of organizing a group of "Brownjackets" to make sure Jobias doesn't get the job. It's doubtful collars will be part of the group's dress code.

The next town meeting at Steelhead is Tuesday night, August 20th.

Editor's Note: The town election campaign was set up as a community roleplay, with "the Jobias Barthelmess character was created for the sole purpose of having an avatar that folks would love to hate."

Interview with TotalLunar Eclipse

By Bixyl Shuftan

With the Steelhead mayoral elections this week, Second Life Newser was able to get a hold of the two candidates expected to have a good shot at winning. Last week, we interviewed leading challenger Willow Leafstorm about the election and what she would do if victorious. This weekend, I sat down with TotalLunar Eclipse, the incumbent candidate. Besides the election, we talked about how he and his wife Tensai ended up in Steelhead and their history there.

Bixyl Shuftan: For those readers who know little about Steelhead, how would you describe yourself?

TotalLunar Eclipse: Physically, I am a moon elf that has taken up being an apprentice mason.

Bixyl Shuftan: How did you come to be in Steelhead?

TotalLunar Eclipse: It was an accident, Tensai and I were running from an angry mob, and we took whatever train could take us to wherever wouldn't ask us too many questions. We took the train to the end of the line, and it was Steelhead."

Bixyl Shuftan: Interesting. What may I ask sparked this angry mob?

TotalLunar Eclipse: (chuckles), At the time I was the hired hand and Tensai was the scientist. Mad scientist I should add. And that was near seven years ago.

Bixyl Shuftan: And getting to Steelhead, how did things go?

TotalLunar Eclipse: Steelhead was perhaps the most friendly place we've ever been to. They saw mad scientist, and accepted it readily (smiles).

Bixyl Shuftan: So you found many like-minded people here?

TotalLunar Eclipse: We found many open minded people here. Everyone has a different tale to tell and they're unique in their own right.

Bixyl Shuftan: And how did your tale go in the first few years?

TotalLunar Eclipse: Steelhead is where I began my trade, building and stonemasonry. I focused on that and Tensai focused on her science.

Bixyl Shuftan: As a builder, what projects have you been the most proud of?

TotalLunar Eclipse: Lately? The new station, the RFL build which is the new city hall.

Bixyl Shuftan: The Relay build was made into a permanent building? Interesting. I take it some Relayers will be pleased to hear that.

TotalLunar Eclipse: Yes, that's our new town hall. It is not down yet as I have to make it more useful to what we need it for but it is the same.

Bixyl Shuftan: What other builds have gotten attention over time?

TotalLunar Eclipse: The sun pagoda in Shanghai, Vista House and Multnomah Falls and the landscaping in St Helens and Nevermoor. Ahh, the building we are in now, this is the new schoolhouse.

Bixyl Shuftan: Looks good. I take it this will be able to suit the needs of all the local youngsters?

TotalLunar Eclipse: Yes, two classrooms so we can have areas for labs, etc.

Bixyl Shuftan: Laboratories? Are these what would normally be found in schools, or are there accommodations for, "mad scientists" in training?

TotalLunar Eclipse: We have our own grade of mad scientists or sons/daughters of notable mad scientists. So science/technology is something we have to focus on.

Bixyl Shuftan: How did you become the mayor of this community?

TotalLunar Eclipse: Would you believe for the longest time I was not? The founder of Steelhead, Kattryn Severine was mayor. Though she left SL a very long time ago, only checking in with Tensai and I on occasion. Finally she released Steelhead to me in full ownership not too long ago. So technically I've been Mayor only about a year.

Bixyl Shuftan: One year ago, what would you say are your best accomplishments as mayor?

TotalLunar Eclipse: Expanding Steelhead Six times its original size.

Bixyl Shuftan: Impressive

TotalLunar Eclipse: Thank you

Bixyl Shuftan: Were there any happenings you had a part in you'd like to mention? Any negotiations with neighbors?

TotalLunar Eclipse: We have had relations with other Steamland sims we'd like to strengthen and grow upon. Steelhead is a city of friends and that friendship has lasted a very long time for Second Life.

Bixyl Shuftan: Any incidents while you've been mayor?

TotalLunar Eclipse: Yes, in Shanghai there were mobs that took a great deal of time to clear out and many disappearances that are still left unsolved.

Bixyl Shuftan: How were those dealt with?

TotalLunar Eclipse: We had a team of undercover investigators and those who infiltrated the mafia. We were able to catch them at the crime and arrest them

Bixyl Shuftan: Mafia? Sounds serious.

TotalLunar Eclipse : (nods) A dangerous fae with her ear more to the floor than mine own.

Bixyl Shuftan: What fae was this?

TotalLunar Eclipse: Aoi Steamweaver is her name. She and her band of fae mercenaries finally returned to China.

Bixyl Shuftan: So she seems to be gone for good?

TotalLunar Eclipse: I do hope so though we are never fully aware if that family will return or another family will come in to take its place.

Bixyl Shuftan: Going to more recent matters, what inspired that bet between you and Jimmy Branagh?

TotalLunar Eclipse: Oh. just teacher against student in my mind. Obviously a very bad move, heh.

Bixyl Shuftan:  (chuckles a bit) So it seemed like a harmless publicity stunt. At least until someone, as the story goes, found a technicality in the local law.

TotalLunar Eclipse: (nods) The lawyers are so finicky.

Bixyl Shuftan: For the record, which lawyer was this?

TotalLunar Eclipse: Remington Pinon, my personal legal consultant and lawyer in Steelhead.

Bixyl Shuftan: Whom were you expecting to be running against before the candidates were announced?

TotalLunar Eclipse: To be honest, no one. This position requires long hours, a lot of time invested into it and I do little else beside it. Most know to stay away from government position.

Bixyl Shuftan: Two challengers stepped up, Willow Leafstorm, and Jobias Barthelmess. How much of a surprise were they?

TotalLunar Eclipse: Willow was not a suprise as she'd expressed interest in the politics of Steelhead before. Jobias though... I am rather surprised he would subject himself to public ridicule after the incidents he involved himself in.

Bixyl Shuftan: I think one such incident was mentioned at the debate, but for the readers could you describe them, or at least the more noteable ones?

TotalLunar Eclipse: As a rule I do not slander people especially opponents but Jobias has been involved in past transgressions involving Fuzzball Ortega and his desire to rule Steelhead.

Bixyl Shuftan: At the debates, I believe there was mentioned an incident involving a silver bullet.

TotalLunar Eclipse: Yes, he shot our sheriff and as you know Fuzz is a lycan. So silver is quite lethal.

Bixyl Shuftan: Well, the sheriff is obviously alive and well. Was he a bad shot, or did something else go wrong?

TotalLunar Eclipse: Fuzz outwitted Jobias, he was never in any danger. But... Jobias has done his time and since then has led a relatively quiet life.

Bixyl Shuftan: Willow expressed some concerns about what Jobias would do if elected, although felt he stood almost no chance of winning.

TotalLunar Eclipse: He is not a favorite among many. His intolerance for those of us who are not human blood is quite evident.

Bixyl Shuftan: And even among humans, I understand he's not seen much better?

TotalLunar Eclipse: No, he hires henchmen only to not pay them, gets out loans and such to fund his former terrorism ways and doesn't repay. So banks are unwilling to lend to him anymore.

Bixyl Shuftan: Between you and Willow, this seems to be a campaign of limited stakes. Her only issue about you, if one can call it that, is being both Steelhead's builder and mayor at once is too taxing and strenuous.

TotalLunar Eclipse: At this point of time it is quite taxing on me but that's why I have ambassadors that run things for me. I will be utilizing them more in the upcoming months. That is if I win *smiles*

Bixyl Shuftan: So you feel Willow has an even chance of besting you?

TotalLunar Eclipse: I shouldn't say anything concerning other's candidacy. *smiles* But I feel she is a good speaker and has given her speeches and ideas a great deal of thought.

Bixyl Shuftan: Gotcha. Well, other than what you already mentioned, what would your goals be under another term as mayor?

TotalLunar Eclipse: I am taking what Willow has said to heart and utilizing my ambassadors more, finding different ways to advertise the sim and getting more citizens involved in its upkeep. I always feel like I am imposing asking someone to do something, but I should get out of my shell and let others assist.

Bixyl Shuftan: Let's see ... I haven't brought up Tensai until now. What has she thought about the election?

TotalLunar Eclipse: She chuckles under her breath about it, says I shouldn't do things... exactly to the law.

Bixyl Shuftan: (chuckles a bit) That covers most of our questions. Though if you don't mind, might I ask about that device on your wrist?

TotalLunar Eclipse: My typewriter? Certainly, its a beautiful device made for me. With moon elves the males, after a certain maturity, become empathic. And they lose their ability to speak, it's all telepathic. This is just a voice enhancer, as I am getting older and my voice is losing its volume.

Bixyl Shuftan: Oh, sorry to hear that, Lunar.

TotalLunar Eclipse: That's alright about my voice, it is replaced by the coolness of this device.

Bixyl Shuftan: Was there anything else you wanted to mention?

TotalLunar Eclipse: Anything else? Nay, just that I would be very honored to steward Steelhead again as I have for years prior.

Bixyl Shuftan: If that's everything, thank you again for your time.

TotalLunar Eclipse: Thank you Bixyl.

The Steelhead mayoral elections begin on Tuesday August 6, and the voting closes On Friday August 9th. The winner will be announced at the Tuesday Town Hall meeting.

Steelhead's Mayoral Elections: Willow Leafstorm

In The Steelhead Community these days, the big event is the campaign for the job of mayor. Three candidates are competing for the job. They are incumbent TotalLunar Eclipse and two challengers, Willow Leafstorm (Zoelass Resident), and Jobias Barthelmess. I recently had a chance to talk with Willow about the elections.

"I'm hoping the elections will be interesting and turn out lots of people to vote," Willow told me just after meeting up with her. Talking about how the campaign got started, it went back to June 23rd when Lunar and one of the youngsters, Jimmy Branagh both entered the Sumo wrestling matches. Lunar made a bet he couldn't lose, saying if Jimmy won he'd be mayor for a week. And as it turned out the scrappy street urchin beat him.

As luck would have it, it wasn't just as simple as making Jimmy honorary mayor for a week. Willow explained, "Through some technicality in the Steelhead bylaws, Lunar would have to be re-elected to his position of Mayor in order to be re-seated as Mayor. Of course this meant that there would have to be elections. At first everyone thought it was just going to be nominations, but then there was an application process. The Baron (Klaus Wulfenbach) had expressed interest in running, but had missed the application deadline. … some people weren't willing to run in the first place. Then we discovered that this Jobias Barthelmess had applied."

As for the third candidate Jobias, Willow described him as a classic mouthstached black-hatted villain, "He is a scoundrel and rogue … he couldn't even come to the meeting when they announced the candidates. Truly bad form." Of his plans, "He is determined to destroy the trees in St. Helens and set up factories and Strip mine Boomtown. Then he wants to 'rid Steelhead of all undesirables and only allow the right people to live in Steelhead.' I take it to mean from his statements that includes all non-humans including fae. I can not let him do that."

Willow had more reasons to run besides the man in the black hat, "I just want to help out my community. Not just the fae that live here, but Nevermoor as well. We have not been represented in the Steelhead council. There are a number of Steelhead Ambassadors, but as far as I can tell none from Nevermoor. We are a newer region in Steelhead with a newer population. Many of, if not all, of the Ambassadors are ones that have been here for at least 5 or more years."

And what would Willow's goals be as mayor? "First would be to make sure each region would be represented with councilors. Next, organize the community to help promote Steelhead to bring people in to Steelhead and have volunteer greeters. There are also empty lots in Steelhead city, I think we need to put something in them until they can be rented like park space or structures. Nobody, explores empty lots. Plus, we need more landscaping in the city. Toss in a few trees and add some flower beds. Things that will attract people to our town and want to move here."

"Finally," the challenger stated, "I noticed as I fly around there is a lot of prim trash out there. We need to clear the skies of the debris. … I was going to fly home from an event a few weeks ago and I took a leap from the platform where the dance was held and nearly smacked myself on a piece of floating prim. These things get away from people as they build and just hang around in the air. That stuff just collects after a number of years." She wondered if while building, some things just floated away from some building sites when the builder's attention was occupied, "Then there are things that former residents leave up there. Half completed projects and skyboxes."

Of the upcoming debates, Willow spoke, "I still have to polish up my statements. It would be nice to know in advance what the questions asked would be." The fae then grinned, "Jobless Bathtubmess doesn't have a chance." I asked if she expected turnout to be heavy, "It's hard to say, it depends if the rest of the community is going to sit up and take notice. I have been getting my voter base motivated to vote." Asking her who she thought her voting base was, her first response was the residents of Nevermoor, then she added, "any other non-humans who don't want to see Barthelmess win. As I told Lunar at last Tuesday's meeting, May the best fae win."

Our time soon came to a close. I asked Willow what else she had to say. She concluded, "Just that being mayor and also responsible for building and maintaining a town like Steelhead is a big job for just one person to handle. And of Course Vote Willow Leafstorm for Mayor."

We then parted ways. We would meet again a couple days later on Friday August 2nd for the debates. The election itself takes place on Tuesday August 6th, will ballots able to be turned in until Friday August 9th. The winner of the mayoral race will be announced on Tues Aug 13th.

The Steelhead Salmons' Kickoff Party

By Bixyl Shuftan

On Sunday March the 10th, the Steelhead Salmons held their kickoff event for the 2013 Relay for Life season. From about 1 PM SL time to about 9PM, DJs spun their tunes at the steampunk community's Club Gearz.

Join Steelhead for their RFL Kickoff Event, with music and assorted fun, including 'The Hair.' … Also a Jail and Bail scattered through the afternoon (No, Trader is busy today, please no more IMs asking me to arrest him). Hope you can join us.

Filling in for Aryon Dagger, Fuzzball Ortega DJed from 1 to 3 PM. From 3 to 5PM. the latex-clad Madonna Daehile had her turn with the tunage. At 5PM, Vic Morrington played the music. Earlier in the event, Fuzzball was in the cage for the Jail n' Bail. While Vic played, it was Gem Sunkiller who was under arrest. She danced in the cage, wearing a sizable purple wig and a "100 Years of Hope" T-shirt. People dropped in amounts at the Steelhead vendor until 5000 Lindens had been raised. She was finally free to go.

At 7PM. Fuzzball took over the stream once again, also broadcasting on Krypton Radio. He stool in the corner, sporting "The Hair." For those not in the know, Fuzzball bet in the 2011 season that if the Steelhead Salmons went Platinum, he'd "wear the wackiest, wildest, hair around. Well, here it is." Since then, "The Hair" has continued to be a source of humor and pride for the Salmons. Problem is, it blocks his view of movement. When moving around, he usually has to put away the enormous headpiece so huge, it's weight is supported by propellers. Fuzzball stood next to a sign that some Relayer had done a few weeks ago, and somehow became popular among his fans, "Blame Fuzz and Go Relay." While he sometimes pretends to be mad about it, like other good-natured ribbings that his fellow Relayers have given him, he took it in stride.

The crowd at Club Gearz was a mixed one. Some were Steelhead residents. Others were noted Relayers from outside the steampunk community. And some were simply friends of both whom were not part of any Relay team. Someone showed up in an anthro skunk avatar, a reference to "Stinky the Skunk," the character who show's up on a Relay team's page when someone donates at ACS  Island to "skunk" the team. As it turned out, the day after the event someone *did* pay to have the Steelhead Salmons skunked, probably the first team to have been. There was no clue as whom gave the Steelheads this dubious honor.

More than 10,000 Lindens were raised during the Kickoff event, bringing the total raised by the Steelheads to over 20,000 Lindens. As of now, the Steelhead Salmons have raised about 29,500 L in Second Life, and 15,000 L outside the Grid, for a total of 44,500 Lindens. Almost half the amount needed for Silver rank. For this steampunk team of the Relay For Life in Second Life, it was a good beginning.

Relay for Life: Woodstock, The Critter Races, and the Jeffry Pastorelli Tribute

The Weekend of June 30th and July 1st saw a number of Relay for Life events. Some were big, and some were small. One of the bigger ones on Saturday was the "Woodstock: Summer of Love." It was in Nantucket Channel, held by Sail4Life, and went from 9AM  to 9PM SL time (Noon to Midnight EST).

Time to go back to the "Summer of Love"!    Nantucket Yacht Club in support of the Sail4Life Team is recreating Woodstock with 12 hours of Peace and Music running until 9pm tonight.  Come and enjoy the music, take a dip in the pond or play in the mud.  Bring your friends,  Drop in and Drop out.  Drop some Lindens in the RFL Kiosks

Hopping by the place at the time DJ Benny (aka "Benny the Boozehound") was playing, it certainly looked like Woodstock. The area was mainly grassy field, with a stage at one end, which held the performers and where most of the people partied. With the theme, the majority were either dressed like hippies or were nearly naked.

The event area was large on it's own, but surrounded by scenery paneling to make it look more like the countryside. There were a few campers and campsites. At the stage, there was about one new performer every hour for the 12 hour event. Besides the dancing, one could mess around in the mud hole, or one could skinny-dip in the pond. Besides collecting money in the RFL kiosk, the Woodstock event had another way that fit with the theme. People could buy a flower for the event by donating fifty Lindens, and dedicating it to a friend.

As time went on, went the inevitable jokes about stoned hippies and while having cleaned up their act years later still looked back at their wild youth with fond memories. DJ Benny shouted at one point, "Now you can tell everyone you WERE at Woodstock!" Someone else joked in response, "If you can remember being at Woodstock, you weren't there."

Sunday at the Steelhead Estates was one of their last big events for the Relay season, the "Steelhead Critter Races."

A Benefit Event for Relay For Life in Secondlife, sponsored by Team Steelhead Salmons & the Steelhead Public Library. If you have a critter and it can be raced, this event is made for you! Bring your horses, tigers, ostriches, banthas and other ridable critters! You are critterless? Ostrich is lame? Bantha has mange? Then drive one of our free Roman Chariots!

The race was held on a track high above Steelhead Port Harbor, with Sheriff Fuzball Ortega in charge of the event. The race attracted a number of contestants and onlookers, some of the latter whom also brought their own mounts. Besides the horses were a number of exotic mounts, including a "Star Wars" Bantha, a "Cyantian Chronicles" Shiave, and a "Guineapigasaurus." The latter was a horse-sized ridable guinea pig brought in by Mindy, one of Steelhead's kids whom amused/annoyed the others around with it's squeaks, "breeep, breeeep, breeeep!"

There were four races in the event. Although there was a race for any kind of rideable ground mount, no flying mounts were allowed. Also, players could not be the mounts either. There was some debate as to why the second rule, either because of possible jokes about a girl being "mounted" by her boyfriend, or that Fuzzball's fiance Eugene Burton might take advantage by riding him around in his wolf form more often, riding crop in hand. Before the official races, there was a practice lap taken. After that, there was an entry fee of 500L per race, or a one time payment of 1500L for all of them. They were entered by both those from Steelhead, such as Baron Klaus Wuffenbach, and from outside such as Liska Fuchs.

The first race was "Reasonably Sized Critters," any mount that could fit in the starting gates, whether horse or exotic mount. The second race was "Unreasonably Sized Critters." The riders had to go into the starting gate without their mounts, run to the cycle in front of them when it started, rezz their mount, then start running. The third was a normal horse race, although the horses themselves were a variety of kinds from breedables to statics. Baron Wulfenbach loaned his huge horse to one contestant. The first and third race were won by the same rider, whom had an experienced breedable horse. As it turned out, the horse might have given him a small edge as this particular breakable can be trained to run faster.

The fourth race required no fee, or mount of one's own: the steel chariot race with piston-powered mechanical horses provided for free. Trouble was, the chariots were so fast, they proved difficult to steer around the track, getting caught on the walls, tipping over, or getting caught at the starting gate after a lap.

Following the races was a party held by DJ Thadicus Caligari, in which the former competitors and onlookers joined each other for music and dance.

Following the Steelhead races was a memorial event to Jeffry Pastorelli. Jeffery had been a team captain for the Team Relay for Hope whom passed away in 2010 (Prim Perfect article). The event was held at one of Second Life's more solemn areas, the Remembering Our Friends Memorial

Hello everyone, I just wanted to send a reminder that there will be a memorial for Jeffry Pastorelli TONIGHT, Sunday July 1st.  This is being held by Mike Burleigh at 7 PM SLT at Remembering Our Friends, landmark attached.  Please be there if you can, as this means a lot to us all.

The event had a moderate attendance, with among those attending Trader1 Whiplash and Lomgren Smalls. Mike Burleigh was in charge of the music, but much to his irritation, he had some problems getting his stream online, and the problems persisted throughout the event. Lomgren Smalls, whom helped get people to the event,  rezzed a kiosk for his team, the Passionate Redheads, and the money began to pour in. While this year's Redhead events often brought in just several thousand Lindens each, this one was bringing in tens of thousands, bolstered by some promising to match the donations of others. That the money was coming in despite the stream being down led to some jokes, "Can this mean that the music in SL is so bad that people will pay NOT to hear it?"

People talked about Jeffry during the event, "I know he made a huge impression on me. And still does to this day." "I miss him, even if he was a pain in the a** most days" "You know, we wouldn't have loved him as much if he wasn't a pain in the a**." "I can still hear him cussing in the living room when things pissed him off too. He was passionate." "Yes he was. And that passion rubbed off onto so many of us Relayers."

During this time, someone tried to display a copy of the Relay Weekend sims map. But as the area didn't allow for rezzing on the ground, he tried to wear it. But as his avatar moved around, so did the map. Trying to get more than a glance at it was a big challenge.

By the end of the event, 35,000 Lindens had been raised for the Redheads, the team that had struggled this season, bringing it's season total to 245,000L and was a much needed morale boost. The following day, the total would pass 250,000 Lindens, and get the Redheads the Gold standard.

More on Jeffey Patrelli can be heard at a special episode of Designing Worlds, taped at the Remembering Our Friends Memorial (Click Here).

It was quite a weekend with many events, most of which we don't have the time to mention. And as the Relay moves on into July, the Relay Weekend approaches, with nine days left as the prining of this article, the weekend of July 14 and 15, with the Relayers anxiously anticipating the climax to the season.
