The Other Dating Game

By Gemma Cleanslate

Bellisseria fairground was the site of  a really fun event last Saturday, March 7. Sponsored by the new team for the Relay for Life , Bellis Blues and DJs, and Bellisseria for RFL citizens gathered to watch and giggle at The Other Dating Game. Money was raised during the shows, of which there were two.

DJ FAR Dharma (fwdfwd Farslider) was the charming host of the show with assistance from the lovely fairgrounds host, Iseult NĂ Urquhart (PrudenceAnton Resident) . The stage was set with a chair for the bachelor of the game and three stools for the lovely contestants vyeing to be his date. Of course he could not see them,

This is not the first time the show was on and it was such a  success a repeat was requested. I was not able to make the first one, nor the first part of this two hour show but finally got to see the whole show at the second part.

What a riot. Zildjian Clifton took his place on the red sofa and three lovelies arrived to sit on their stools and wait for the questions that would determine his choice. The audience had to get involved by providing their answers too as it progressed. Some of the comments were so distracting and funny it  is a wonder Zildjian could keep his mind on what he was doing and the poor contestants could survive with their own responses.

A sample of a question and answer.

“Zildjian Clifton: No. 2: If lindens were no object, what would you buy for yourself?”

Meli (MelisseLharithlyn Resident): A  year's worth of a full sim”

The show people tried hard to keep it more or less serious . I am sorry I did not think to collect some of the comments from  the audience but it was probably better that I didn’t.

The other contestants , Annie Panties (JadeEast Resident) and Gem Parker (Gem Oxygen)
waited patiently to face their questions and interference from the  watchers.

At the end Zildjian chose contestant number three, Gem Parker as his date. All those attending sent waves of applause to each of the show’s participants . I don’t know where or when the date will take place but will find out . I hope  the show will be on again it was amusing and raised some good funds for the Relay. North Crannock reported,

“after todays fantastic donations to RFL our current Bellisseria joint donations are
B - Bellis Blues and Djs  L$: 50,520     USD: $202.08
Bellisseria for RFL       L$: 230,853    USD: $923.41
Total                           L$: 281,373     USD: 1,125.49“

Roleplaying Basics

By Theonlyjohnny Resident

Role playing, to some people, is a waste of time. However, to people like me, role playing is not a waste of time, in fact, we love to role play, and a lot of us role play on different sims, and even on different websites.

However, role playing can be a bit demanding, if you're not prepared. That is why I made this guide to role playing, to make sure you're prepared for role playing.

Let's start off at the beginning. The first thing you do, before you even make a character, is find out the story of the roleplay, and what has been going on recently. Just knowing the role play's back story is not enough. You must know what has happened, in the story, recently, so you don't jump on in, and become confused right away.

To find out the story, see if there are any info boards near the welcome area. If there are none, then go ahead and see if any of the sim's admins are online. If you do find one online, then ask them about the story.

Once you've found out about the story, you think you're ready to begin making your character right? Wrong. You still have to find out the rules. Most people would argue about this, and say that the rules are the first thing you look at. Why look at the rules, if you're not sure you're going to role play there yet?

To find out the rules, use the same method you did, to find out the story. Don't just look at the sim rules, look at the race rules and all that too.

Now that you've read the story, and the rules, it is finally time to make your character right? Well, technically yes and no. It is time to make your character, using clothes, and parts. A lot of times, the Character card will ask what your character wears, so this is a crucial part of making your character, so that you don't have to keep going back, and changing things, on your character sheet.

Go into the Marketplace, and look for the right genre of clothing, for your character, that fits the sim. If the sim is dark and gloomy, don't get bright colored clothing, get clothing that is dark colored. If it's a medieval sim, don't have your character wearing silk, unless they are of royalty. If it is a cyber themed roleplay, then it's probably not a good idea to be walking around, in a loin cloth (You'd be surprised how many times I've seen it happen.).

Well once you have your character's skin, clothing, shape, and attachments picked out, it's finally time to make your character.

Using the same method you did, for the story, and rules, get the character sheet, and start by filling out the basics.

Name, Age, Gender, Species, Clothing.

Those are simple, and easy to come up with.

When you have those finished, it's time to start on the major parts of it. These include the back story, strengths, weaknesses, disabilities, and other items like that.

Back story, while it may seem to come to some people easily, is the hardest part of making your character. However, it can be easy, if you just follow this design,

Where were they born? = What planet, city, that kind of thing. If the story is based in space, then planet or planet and city, if it's not, then you don't need planet.

Who were their parents? = Not their names. Just put their wealth (poor, middle class, wealthy), and what their jobs were.

Number of Siblings. = If your character had siblings, then put how many, if they were the youngest of say 3 then say that. If they were the oldest, then put that.

Did anything tragic happen to them? = If your character lost a friend, or a family member, then you put it in their back story, and put how they lost them.

How did they get here? = If the story is not based on your character's home, then how did they get there?

Why are they here? = What are their goals? What do they plan to accomplish?

And that will wrap up your back story nice and neat.

Strengths and weaknesses, are some of the easiest to come up with, yet they seem hard. Just think of it this way, what are their skills? What are they good at? Those are their strengths. Weaknesses would include their fears, allergies, and what would cause them to give up.

Some people consider disabilities a weakness, but that is not true. Look at how many disabled people can do things that everyone else can do. Disabilities include born without a part of their body, or a weak part of their body. Blindness would be considered a disability as well, same with deafness, and being mute (you can't talk).

Well once you have that finished, it's time to read over your character sheet. If there is something you don't like, then now is the time to change it. Some sims allow characters to be built as the story goes on, in which case after a while, your character will change more and more. In sims like that, you don't have to get your character the way you want the, to begin with, since you can just change them as the story goes on.

Once you've read over your character sheet, it's time to turn it in. However, once you turn it in, wait a few days, and go back to the sim, every so often, till your character has been accepted. If it has not been accepted, then simply ask them why, and change it accordingly.

Dunk the Emperor

By DrFran Babcock

On Saturday from 10 to noon Second Life™ time, the "Relay Wizards for Spunky" held an American Cancer Society event called: "Dunk The Emperor." The event raised a stunning 33,500 Lindens, because Tiny Empires is still a popular pastime in world.

Even if you never played it, if you hate it, or if you met and fell in love because of it, you know Tiny Empires, the HUD game that swept the grid a few years ago, and continues to be played by hundreds, nay thousands, of residents.

Many of the friends I have today are friends I either made during Tiny Empires beginnings or became friendly with recently when I revealed I had a HUD with many idle acres. The HUD often speaks of the Emperor, but I really didn’t think he was an actual person until the event. Ultralite Soliel is the man behind the creation of the wildly popular game, and it turns out a wickedly funny guy, who donated his body to the cause.

Ultralite stationed himself in a seat above a dunk tub that had a target attached to it. Folks could buy three balls to try to unseat him from a Relay vendor. A huge crowd of people gathered, both to watch the Emperor take his falls, and to cheer on the people attempting to soak him. While they waited and watched, they danced, chatted, and talked in type and voice, all while T1 Radio played. T1 is the official radio station of the Second Life Relay for Life.

As the event progressed, Ultralite’s emperor robes were becoming heavy with water, so, with urging from the crowd, he stripped down to his bright yellow scuba suit. Many hoots and hollers ensued, because he had bought a new skin for the event and looked hot!

The whole event was planned by Relay Wizards for Spunky Captain Shawna Montgomery, who was the first Queen in Tiny Empires. She was assisted by Co-Captains HALEY Salomon and Anhayla Lycia, and other members of the team.

The Relay Wizards for Spunky celebrate their seventh year in Relay this year. Their undying commitment to the Relay for Life is a role model for consistency and superb leadership. The group is named for survivor SpUnKy u Young, also a Co-Captain.

If you are looking for some meaning in Second Life™ join a Relay group and see what you can do. I promise you a richer Second Life™.

Editor's note: Ranchan Weidman, stated in a group chat that Ultra had set a goal of 8,000 raised by Noon, and if it was met he'd arrange for bonus events in the Tiny Empire games. The goal was reached.

Are You an Internet Addict? Comment!

If you are reading this, you are a likely Second Life (SL) addict. Take this quick SL addiction quiz (based upon netaddiction.com)

Q1) Do you think about SL when offline?
Q2) Have you tried to cut back or quit SL? Many times?
Q3) Do you often use SL longer than expected?
Q4) Has SL affected your job or Real Life (RL) relationships?
Q5) Do you become irritated when someone RL interrupts your SL?
Q6) Are you addicted to nicotine, drugs, alcohol, or cybersex?

If you answer yes to any of these questions, you really should take the Internet addiction self test at: http://netaddiction.com/resources/internet_addiction_test.htm

How big is this problem? According to NetAddiction.com and Google statistics, 39,000,000 Americans are Internet addicts, about 1 in 8. And over 400,000,000 Internet addicts in China, Korea, and Taiwan combined, about 3 in 10 people. Woah! That's a lot! And more than half suffer from other addictions!

Experts say Internet addicts "use the fantasy world of the Internet to psychologically escape..." That's a dead ringer for Second Life! OMG!

This Canadian documentary shows the lives of two Second Life addicts. One lady destroys her family life because she is always online, and the other moved in with her Second Life biker BF. Bikers are more fun! lol http://www.cbc.ca/fifth/2008-2009/strangers_in_paradise/

Personally, I know of several divorces and other RL problems of SL addicted users. These problems are obviously more widespread than we can know. What are your experiences? Please Comment!

On yet another addictive night of fun in SL... Pictures= 1 shows a super-fun party at Dumplings country music club in SL http://slurl.com/secondlife/Esterhal/79/110/38

Picture 2 is incredible SL comedian Lauren Weyland shown onstage with the lovely Wytchwhisper, the co-host of The Weekly Look and one of the stars of YAYCats! Catch Lauren's shows 4:30pm slt most Tuesdays and Wednesdays at Lauren's Place http://slurl.com/secondlife/Cookie/128/237/22

Return to “The 1st Question”

It’s been a little over a year since my appearance on “The 1st Question,” hosted by Pooky Amsterdam. She had invited me onto the show the first time after a chance meeting, and meeting up again at the SL7B celebration asked me if I wanted to make another appearance, on Tuesday June 29. Needless to say, I accepted.

For those not familiar with the game show, “The fast-paced, fact-based, fun hour of science related merrymaking, audience participation, prizes, wit & wisdom,” it’s broadcasted live on Treet.tv every Tuesday night at 7 PM SL time. Consisting of a combination of science trivia questions and other mindbenders, it’s been called “A cross between lunch with Albert Einstein and the classic 50’s game show.” Four contestants try to outdo one another in front of a live audience numbering a few dozen, while the show is broadcasted live to compatible viewer TV sets within Second Life and the live broadcast page on the Treet.tv website. Old shows can be seen by checking the archives.

Contestants have to show up by 5:30 PM SL time at the show location in order to prepare for the show, to make sure there won’t be any technical clitches such as echoes and feedback. Besides myself, the contestants were White Lebed, an “Artist-in-Residence” at The University of Western Australia (UWA) and one of the volunteer staff for SL7B as well as being involved with Burning Life, Matt Fiertze, the “founder of First Link & vBusiness Link,” and Fire Centaur, the director of B3D Multitech Limited, and whom liked to focus on education in SL.

The show started up at 7 PM, with a little funnery display from a surfing tiny, then Pooky and her cohost Hydra Shaftoe introduced themselves, then us. Hydra has been involved in some real-life news lately as he volunteered some time to help clean up some oil-soaked birds in the recent Gulf oil spill. We first engaged in a little science funnery as we were asked which element we thought represented us. My answer: iron. It was what type was made out of, and when it rusted, it was the color of my avie. Matt went with carbon, “keep it simple.”

In “Nuggets of Knowledge,” we were asked to each ask Hydra a trivia question that we knew the answer to. Mine was, “can one of the space shuttle’s insulating tiles be held in someone’s bare hands when red hot?” In “Word Up,” we were asked to make up a word with a definition, with the audience to vote on whom was best. I thought I did good with “bubblic - addicted to popping bubble wrap packing material.” But Matt wowed them with his “Prim-Fu" - the art of building with as low a prim count as possible to combat lag and other glitches. The audience voted his “not a word but should be” as best.

We went on with “Yea Me or Nay Me” and other sections with trivia questions. I did better this second time than the first, feeling not so tense. I was tied for first for a while, then Matt took the lead and kept it. The audience helped me stay un the running with a couple questions. But at the show’s end, Matt Fiertze was the winner with 12 points. I was second with a respectable 8. White and Fire had some bad luck and were further behind.

For winning, Matt had a chance to visit Pooky’s prize vault. But Pooky congratulated all of us for doing a good job under the pressure of the camera. Three of my friends, including Grey Lupindo, also showed up for the show, with a number presumably watching live from the Treet website.

As it turned out, this will be the last live showing of “The 1st Question” until August. Until then, people can always go to the archives. The episode I appeared on Tuesday can now be seen in them: Here.

And yes, I know my voice is weird.

“You have a question, we have the answer.”
